FLAC3D
What’s New in FLAC3D V9.6
Version 9.6 includes powerful tools for simplified model building, new constitutive models, and more.
Automated Domain Generation
Eliminate the manual effort of building surrounding environments. This tool automatically generates far-field zones around your core FLAC3D model, ensuring seamless zone gradation and perfect boundary transitions. Whether using Sketch extrusions or imported grids, you can now create a complete, ready-to-solve model instantly, allowing you to focus on engineering analysis rather than mesh construction.

New Structural Concrete Modeling Capabilities
Model realistic soil-structure interactions without the burden of high-density 3D meshes. You can now assign concrete constitutive models directly to structural elements like piles, shells and liners, ensuring accurate volume displacement and contact area. This streamlined workflow eliminates computational bottlenecks and data extraction hurdles, delivering precise results for diaphragm walls and deep foundations faster.
Focus Your Factor-of-Safety on What Matters
Accelerate your safety analysis by targeting specific regions for shear strength reduction. You can now restrict calculations to critical areas, ignoring minor instabilities to focus on large-scale failures. With full support for elastic and null zones, this enhanced logic simplifies complex workflows like excavation relaxation and backfill planning while significantly reducing total computation time.

High-Fidelity Predictions for Salt Rock Stability
Ensure long-term safety and regulatory compliance with the “gold standard” in salt mechanics. The Munson-Dawson model accurately predicts cavern closure and surface subsidence by accounting for complex, time-dependent creep behavior. By integrating temperature and stress variables, you can simulate decades of structural integrity with high precision—essential for energy storage and nuclear waste isolation projects.
Enhanced Precision for Complex Sketch Geometries
Accelerate your 2D modeling with intelligent automation and precise mesh control. New “hard nodes” ensure mesh generation exactly at your coordinates, while the updated Joint-set Wizard automatically converts 3D dip orientations for your Sketch plane. These enhancements eliminate manual geometric calculations and streamline placement, allowing you to build complex, high-fidelity structural models with significantly less effort.

Simulate Extreme Deformation with Hybrid MPM Coupling
Solve zone distortion issues by coupling FLAC3D with MPoint3D (Beta). This material point method (MPM) integration allows for seamless transitions between standard zones and material points during extreme strain. By restricting MPM processing to high-deformation regions, you accelerate large-strain computations for applications like slope runouts, dam failures, and pile penetration—all while maintaining consistent boundary conditions.
What’s New in FLAC3D V9.5
Version 9.5 focuses on blasting applications with new rapid tools, constitutive model, and examples.
New FLAC3D Examples for Rock Blasting
Two new example models specific to rock blasting applications have been added: an example of borehole-rock interaction and an example of mine bench and stope scale vibration. See online documentation for more details. Note: Dynamic Analysis Option required.
Enhanced Hoek-Brown Rapid Tool
You can now import triaxial data for automatic curve-fitting to calculate Hoek-Brown parameters. Updates also provide a Mohr-Coulomb fit and allow direct manipulation of the Hoek-Brown parameters.
JWL Constitutive Model for Blasting
The JWL (Jones-Wilkins-Lee) equation of state (EOS) is available as a constitutive model in FLAC3D Version 9.5. It enables simulation of the thermodynamic behavior of detonation products as they expand and models the propagation of detonation waves and the interaction of explosive products with surrounding materials. Note: Dynamic Analysis Option required.
